Khaled Hosseini: A Bestselling Author and a Humanitarian
Khaled Hosseini is a renowned novelist who has captivated millions of readers with his vivid and powerful stories of Afghanistan. He is also a humanitarian who has dedicated his time and resources to help the people of his homeland and other refugees around the world.
Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 1965. His father was a diplomat and his mother was a teacher. He spent his childhood in Kabul, enjoying kite flying, storytelling, and reading. In 1976, his family moved to Paris, where his father worked at the Afghan embassy. However, they could not return to Afghanistan after the Soviet invasion in 1979, and they sought political asylum in the United States. It tells the story of Amir, a privileged boy from Kabul who betrays his childhood friend Hassan, the son of a family servant. The novel explores themes of guilt, redemption, friendship, and identity against the backdrop of Afghanistan's turbulent history. The Kite Runner was adapted into a film in 2007 and a stage play in 2016.
His second novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, was published in 2007 and also became a global phenomenon. It follows the lives of two women, Mariam and Laila, who suffer under the oppression of the Taliban regime and find strength and love in each other. The novel highlights the plight of Afghan women and their resilience in the face of violence and injustice. A Thousand Splendid Suns was also adapted into a stage play in 2017.
His third novel, And the Mountains Echoed, was published in 2013 and received critical acclaim. It spans six decades and four continents, weaving together the stories of different characters who are connected by a fateful decision made by a poor Afghan father. The novel explores themes of family, sacrifice, loyalty, and betrayal.
In addition to his novels, Hosseini has also written two short books: Sea Prayer (2018), a poetic tribute to the refugees who died crossing the Mediterranean Sea; and A Fortunate Man (2020), a biographical portrait of an Afghan doctor who runs a clinic for women in Kabul.
Hosseini is not only a successful writer but also a committed humanitarian. In 2006, he was appointed as a goodwill ambassador for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. He has visited several refugee camps and raised awareness and funds for their needs. He has also founded The Khaled Hosseini Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan.
